WHAT IS SOMNIVORE?

The low-throughput nature of manual sleep scoring is a major factor hindering sleep research.

We developed and validated Somnivore, a novel platform using machine-learning for automated scoring and analysis of polysomnography data.

  HOW DOES SOMNIVORE PERFORM?


Validation is measured as the F-measure auto-scoring agreement versus manual scoring of external scorers in independent laboratories.



RODENT SLEEP


F-Measure = ≥0.91 on all stages ~0.95 overall; expandable to >0.95 on all stages and >0.97 overall via automated exclusion of transition epochs.

Tested on 54 recordings of mice (C57Bl/6J wild type and transgenic orexin-knockout) and rats (Wistar, Sprague-Dawley, treatments: placebo, muscimol microinjected in rostral ventromedial medulla, caffeine, zolpidem, almorexant).


HUMAN SLEEP


F-Measure = wake 0.91; N1 0.57; N2 0.81; N3 0.86; REM 0.87; overall 0.85, which matches the agreement between two external manual scorers within the same laboratory on all stages.

Tested on 52 recordings of Cohort 1 (male, female, young healthy; old healthy; old mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients) and Cohort 2 (male, female, placebo treatment; alcohol treatment).


AVIAN SLEEP


F-Measure = ≥0.90 on all stages except REM (0.87) and ~0.96 overall; expandable to >0.90 on all stages and ~0.99 overall via automated exclusion of transition epochs.

Tested on 5 recordings of 4-days length from implanted neurologgers in wild pigeons.
